SSR AIMS
The name of the Charity shall be “Staffie Smiles Rescue” - SSR set up specifically to rescue and rehome unwanted Staffordshire Bull Terriers and staffie crosses in the UK who have served their 7 days in the pound. If after seven days the dog remains unclaimed it is often that the dog is euthanised. This fate is particularly common for dogs of Staffordshire Bull Terrier breed or appearance as due to the negativity they receive as a breed, rescues are full of such breeds and their crosses.
We have trustees and a committee who oversee the management of the rescue including managing a bank account, recording of incomings & outgoings, organising fundraising and campaigning events, recruiting supporters and updating database records of our available and rehomed dogs.
Our daily work involves speaking with potential adopters and fosterers on the phone/via email and Facebook. We advertise our available dogs for adoption on Facebook, our website and via posters in local veterinary surgeries.
We also encourage our volunteers to advertise our dogs looking for foster or forever homes.
Our Adoption Fees:
Puppy (under 1 year old): £300.00
Adult (1 - 8 years old): £250.00
Oldie (9+ years old): £130.00
This fee will be required to be paid either via bank transfer or PayPal to - [email protected] (gift/personal option).
This adoption fee also goes towards the dogs being neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and flea/worm treated, the current costs of castration is £100-250, the costs of spay is £200-£500, the cost of vaccinations against potentially fatal yet common disease is £120-£140, and the cost of microchipping is £20-£35. It also helps us to help other dogs in dire need.
ALL OUR DOGS ARE :
Every potential adopter and foster carer is carefully home-checked to ensure they can offer a suitable environment for a dog and to ensure we match a dog to them that suits their expectations and lifestyle. We cover travel expenses where required for our Home-checkers who kindly volunteer their experience and time to help the dogs. For our foster homes, we provide food, dog collar, leads, bowls and flea/worm treatments along with any other medical/behavioural needs required. We try where we can to source local vets near the fosterers home.
Those who wish to commit to a full adoption are also required to undergo a home-check, once a suitable dog has been placed in its adoptive home, one of our volunteers ensures the introduction to the new home goes smoothly and is on hand to answer any queries and address any concerns that may arise when the dog is introduced to the home. We also ensure regular contact is maintained between the adopter and a committee member to make sure the dog is settling in well and we can help with any issues that arise . We have a private facebook group dedicated to helping our adopters and the dogs, the group helps by giving support and advice to new adopters.
We aim to promote our rescue by way of advertising and merchandise. Advertising currently takes place mainly through the internet and by placing posters in businesses. We hope to introduce a range of products such as car stickers, T-shirts, Hooded Tops, Pens, bandanas and fridge magnets to help with raising awareness of not only our dogs but the aims of the rescue.
A large part of our work is made possible with the cooperation of staff in kennels and pounds which have the seven-day policy and it is thanks to their links with transportation companies etc that enables us to carry out the work we do. These links also assist our advertisement for the rescue and our aims.
ABOUT OUR DOGS
We are in the minority, along with a select few other Scottish Rescues, who are actively seeking to help those "Death Row" dogs. These dogs find themselves in that situation for a variety of reasons which includes but is not limited to owner bereavement, relationship breakdown, theft, straying, abandonment, owners in financial crisis and sadly when owners discover the cute puppy needs training and the novelty wears off. They more often than not make excellent family pets and loyal companions who just need help to find the right, well checked, home.
The dogs come to us from all over the UK, not just Scotland. They are unassessed strays who have served their 7 days and are at immediate risk of being put to sleep. We transport the dogs, with the aforementioned help to us where they are placed in suitable foster care, ensuring wherever possible they can be monitored and assessed in a home environment if this is not immediately possible they are boarded in one of our approved kennels. We cover the boarding costs in addition to having them neutered, microchipped etc, our kennelling fees are approx £10-£14 per day per dog currently.
Each dog is individually assessed for suitability within a home environment including its suitability to be with other dogs, cats and children. This ensures the best chance of a positive outcome not just for the dog, but also for the family offering to adopt a dog. We are fortunate to have the backing of a few qualified behaviourist who are on hand to offer advice and tips should any issues become apparent.
We are a non destruct rescue so will do what is within our powers to ensure dogs in our care are appropriately and fully rehabilitated, should this be necessary, followed by an intensive home matching process to ensure any dog which has had to undergo rehabilitation training is only placed in a suitable breed experienced home.
