Thinking about fostering?

Foster carers are the lifeline for our dogs, and the more carers we have, the more dogs we can save. Providing foster care for a staffie will certainly be a rewarding experience, but will also be an emotionally challenging.

Sending a successful foster to his forever home is bittersweet,  you are saying goodbye to a friend, which hurts, but are also sending them on to a new life,  a place where they will be cherished,  loved and safe until they leave for rainbow bridge.

A furever home, what every dog dreams of.

Important notice!! please read
Don't apply if:
  • You demand the dog be removed because it came in and wee'd on your floors.

  • You demand the dog is removed within 10 minutes because it growled at your dog or went for your dog.

  • You would threaten to take the foster dog to the a kennel if we don't collect immediately.

  • You think you know better than us about how to introduce your dog etc, so you don't need to listen to what we say.

  • You cannot understand that your foster dog is scared, confused and unsettled and may be that way for several days.

  • You are going to throw a wobbler and have a panic attack for any of the above reasons.

SOME OF YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Why PET and KID FREE foster homes ?
  • some of our dog  come to us from council dog pounds and we have NO history on them.
  • We need fosterers to take the dogs and help to assess them, so we can then place them into homes that are best suited to their needs.

What if I work FULL TIME ?
  • We don’t know if the dog is destructive when left alone or if the dog might hurt itself if left. Hence the dog needs  somebody that can help them to work on being left for short periods at 1st and then building this up over time
  • Some of these dogs are traumatised and putting them in a home and leaving them all day by themselves is not an option and not fair on the dog.

I Live in a FLAT ?
  • We have no issues with this at all . This means you need to get the dog out and walked.

I have YOUNG KIDS ?
  • Some of our dogs have no history so we do not place them in homes with young kids.
  • We know people are experienced with dogs but we need to be sensible here and put the dogs needs 1st.
  • A noisy home with kids is not good for a new dog especially if it has been through a lot of stress in a pound and losing its owners.

I have other dogs DOGS ?
  • Your dog might be the friendliest dog ever but these strays have no history at all so we could not guarantee they are dog friendly.
  • It would be reckless of us if we placed a dog with you straight from a pound. This is something we never do.
  • It’s traumatic for a  dog coming in to us.  They are confused, lost and looking for their owners, they can be stressed or shut down. Placing them in a home with another dog might add to the stress, hence we look for pet free homes 1st to let the dog decompress and relax before we do any dog assessments.
  • Some dogs are dog friendly outside but don’t like sharing their home with another dog!
  • Some dogs wont share toys or their humans with a new dog.

I have UN-NEUTERED PETS ?
  • We as a rescue promote the neutering and spaying of all dogs. We would not place a foster or an adopted dog into a home with dogs  that are not already neutered/spayed.
  • If your dog has a medical reason and cant be spayed or neutered please let us know.

I have CATS ?
  • Our dogs need to decompress, we would never place a dog in a home that was not used to cats or other animals.

I have SMALL FURRIE animals?
  • lots of dogs have high prey drives, even haven a pet in a crate in the other room can set them off and they wont settle

Put yourself in the dog's position
These dogs have been dumped, abandoned and some times abused. We need to do what’s right for the dog . This is a foster home with somebody about for part or most of the time, No other pets and NO kids. so the dog can get all the attention and have a space to relax and destress.

Imagine your dog being bumped and ending up in a council dog pound ! how scary would that be for them, they would be searching for you. Scared, traumatised alone and feeling very venerable.

We hope you understand our reasons for pet and kid free homes .

Once a dog is assessed we can look for different foster homes/adoptive homes  that might suit that dogs needs but initially to save them from death row we need pet and kid free homes.

Thank you for your understanding
.

Fostering responsibilities

Aside from regular day-to-day care (feeding, grooming and exercise), the responsibilities of a foster home may include:

  • Basic training (house training, walking on a leash, sit, down, stay)
  • Behaviour modification (to correct problems with help from us with such things as jumping, mouthing, barking, destructive chewing and dashing through door

  •  Socialisation and temperament evaluation (to determine whether the dog is good with people, dogs, cats, other animals)
  • Showing the dog how to play, some of our dogs don't know what toys are used for.

  • Patience, patience, patience. Your foster is coming into a new environment; they may be anxious or excited. Accidents may happen. Please be patient with your foster.

  • Medical care (taking the dog to vet appointments)

  • Plenty of playtime and snuggling!
Join our foster’s FB page,  posting updates and photos of your new foster dog and getting support and help when needed, also helping to support other foster families in the same position as you with a new dog.
